HOUSE 2: HILLSIDE HOUSE, MORAGA CA

This 5,000-square foot house—nestled in a hillside in Moraga, California—is an expression of detail and play with volume, space and light. Upon approach, the first thing you notice is the home’s color: a rich, warm russet tone. Large steel trusses are topped with a stained wood interior ceiling, an homage to Bernard Maybeck’s work in Berkeley around the 1920’s. The second designed by FuTung Cheng, this house showcases roof rainwater as a feature of the home. A large, conical section of copper conducts all rainwater run-off from the main house roof and directs it to cascade to a stone vortex located at the front yard.
